A guy in Winter Gardens, Lakeside called me about a 2016 BMW Z4. He'd lost his only key somewhere between the garage and the trailhead and had already called the dealer. They told him the key had to be ordered by VIN, delivery would be several business days minimum, and he'd need to tow the car in for programming once it arrived. The Z4's key is a mechanical turn-key. People sometimes expect something fancier on a BMW roadster, but this one goes into a cylinder like any other key. The transponder chip inside is what ties it to the car, and since this was an all-keys-lost situation, I had to work through the immobilizer enrollment process on site rather than a simple add-a-key.
I got into the OBD port, ran the all-keys-lost sequence, cut the new key blade to the vehicle, and tested it in the ignition. Start, shut off, start again. Doors. Everything. Done in the driveway.
He mentioned the dealer quote almost as an aside. I didn't make a big thing of it. He had a working key, I was already packing up, and he saved a good chunk compared to what they were going to charge once you factored in the tow and the wait.
