2005 Buick Park Avenue Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near the water on the Bayside side of Imperial Beach. She had a 2005 Park Avenue, one of the last years that nameplate ran, and she was holding a key that looked fine.

Blade wasn't worn down, no visible damage. But every time she turned it, the engine would catch for half a second and die. She thought the car was having a fuel problem and had already been quoted a diagnostic fee at a shop down the road.

I asked her one question: was that the original key or a copy. Copy, she said. Made at a hardware store a couple years back. She'd been using it as her only key for a while.

That told me most of what I needed to know. A standard key machine can cut the blade correctly, but it cannot put a chip inside a blank that doesn't have one, and it definitely cannot program a transponder. The copy she had was probably a non-transponder blank that happened to match the keyway. It would turn the lock just fine and do nothing else.

I cut a proper replacement key blade to match her lock, programmed the transponder chip to her vehicle's immobilizer using the ignition-based relearn since she still had the non-functional copy to reference for the blade cut, and handed it back to her. She turned the key, engine started, stayed running.

She mentioned the dealer had told her to bring it in for a full diagnosis and possible fuel system inspection. That would have cost her a full shop day and a tow if the car wouldn't start reliably. She saved a good chunk and was back on her way inside forty minutes.
