A customer at the Elks lodge in Carlsbad told me he'd already paid another locksmith for a 2008 Cadillac DTS key that never started the car. The engine cranked but the immobilizer killed fuel after two seconds every time. The other locksmith said the body control module was bad and left.
The BCM was fine. The locksmith hadn't completed GM's full key learning procedure. Cadillac's immobilizer requires a specific security sequence that includes a timed learn cycle. If you skip steps or lose power mid-sequence, the key writes temporarily but doesn't commit to the module's permanent memory.
I used my GM Z Lishi to verify the blade cut was at least correct, then connected through OBD. I cleared the failed key data, ran a clean learn with the full security timer, and confirmed the new key was permanently stored. His key, FCC ID , started the engine clean with no fuel cutoff on three consecutive tests. I showed him the IM608 confirmation screen proving the key was permanently registered.
He paid me $168. Dealer charges $364 for the same work. He'd already paid the first locksmith too, which I couldn't help with. But I could make sure the job was actually done right.
