Out near the Border Area in San Ysidro, I got a call from a guy standing in a parking lot with a fob that had gone completely unresponsive. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He had already tried the obvious stuff and was starting to spiral toward "I need to call the dealer and get it towed."
His 2018 Ford EcoSport was sitting right there, so at least the car was accessible. He had gotten in using the mechanical backup key hidden inside the fob housing, but the Smart Key system was not talking to the car at all. Push-button functions were dead.
First thing I checked was the battery. CR2450. The one inside was so drained the voltage tester barely registered it. Swapped it out, reseated the contacts, tested range. Still not fully right. At that point I knew the fob itself needed to be re-paired, either because the battery drain had caused it to fall out of registration or there was some other dropout from the vehicle security system.
I pulled out the diagnostic gear and went through the fob registration process on site. Confirmed the existing fob, cycled through the security sequence, and ran the function test: lock, unlock, remote functions, and ignition response. Everything came back clean.
He had been mentally budgeting for a tow plus a dealer appointment, which around here would have burned most of a day and cost him a lot more. Getting it sorted in the parking lot in under an hour was not what he expected. He pocketed the fob and drove off toward the border like nothing had happened.
