I was out near the CSUSM Area in San Marcos on a Tuesday afternoon. The call came in from a guy who had parked near campus and walked away from his 2019 EcoSport only to come back and have the fob do absolutely nothing. No door unlock, no response from the handle sensor, dash showing a key-not-detected warning when he got inside using the emergency blade.
He figured the fob was dead and had already called the Ford dealer. They told him to bring the vehicle in, said they would need to look at it and possibly order parts. He was looking at several days without his car and a bill he had not gotten a real number on yet. A friend told him to try a mobile locksmith first.
When I got there, I asked him when he had last changed the fob battery. He said never. The car was two years old at the time and had a previous owner. The factory cell was still in there. I opened the fob and the CR2450 tested low, and one of the battery contacts had a slight outward bow where someone had pried the fob apart at some point before he owned it. I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR2450, and the fob lit back up immediately. Range came back, the handle sensor started responding, every button checked out.
Then I walked every function to make sure: lock, unlock, the third button, the emergency blade in the door cylinder, and confirmed the dash warning cleared on start. Clean on all counts.
He did not need a new fob. He did not need a dealer appointment or a parts order. He needed a battery, a straightened contact, and someone who would come to him. The dealer comparison did not even come up after that. It was just not relevant anymore.
