Out near the Lake Poway Area, I got a call from someone who had owned their 2019 G90 for about two years, bought certified pre-owned from a dealer in Poway, and never got around to ordering a spare. Classic story. The fob they had developed a hairline crack along the seam, probably from being dropped a few times, and moisture found its way in over the winter months. By the time they called me, the fob would intermittently lock and unlock but would not consistently wake the push-button start. The car would sit there showing a key warning on the dash, then behave normally ten minutes later. That inconsistency is often more frustrating than a clean failure because you start second-guessing yourself.
I drove out and looked at the fob. The crack had let in enough moisture to corrode one of the internal contacts, but the transponder component itself was reading fine on my equipment. That distinction matters. A fob in bad physical shape is not the same as a dead transponder, and those two failures get handled differently.
Since the existing fob was still registering correctly, I was able to work from the existing key data rather than doing a full all-keys-lost procedure. I built a replacement fob, transferred what was needed, cut the emergency blade to the vehicle, and tested every function. Then I did a second one so they would have a spare going forward.
From the time I pulled up to the time I drove away was under an hour. They kept the original cracked fob as a backup blade source. The dealer had quoted them a wait of several days and a number that made them pause. They called me instead. That is usually how it goes with these.
