The immobilizer inside your Genesis is the reason the key costs more than a simple copy. Every Genesis smart key has a transponder chip that communicates wirelessly with the vehicle's immobilizer module. When you press the start button, the car sends an encrypted challenge to the fob. If the fob responds with the correct code, the engine fires. If not, nothing happens. That's why you can't just copy a Genesis key at the hardware store.
A high school principal at the dry cleaner in Ramona thought only the dealer could work with that encryption. She had a 2024 Genesis G90 and needed a spare.
