Out in Rancho Del Oro, I got a call from a hiking guide whose 1999 GMC Jimmy was sitting in a dirt lot with no key. Said it must have come out of his pocket somewhere on the trail.
He had already called another locksmith who told him the ignition would need to be drilled and replaced, and the quote was steep enough that he figured a second opinion was worth it.

I decoded the lock mechanically, reading each wafer position inside the cylinder without touching or damaging anything. That gave me the exact cut depths I needed. I cut a replacement key blade on site, built out the transponder, and programmed it through the OBD port. Then I handled the remote separately, pairing the four-button fob to the vehicle as part of the all-keys-lost procedure.
The whole thing took about 45 minutes. No drilling, no cylinder replacement, no new ignition assembly. His original lock worked with the new key exactly as it always had.
He asked what the other locksmith would have left him with. I told him a new ignition that did not match his door locks and a bill that reflected the labor of tearing things apart. He nodded and said that tracked.
The dealer was not even in the conversation. They were two hours away and would have needed an appointment.
