2001 GMC Jimmy
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just getting a spare?

More. Always. On the 2001 Jimmy, when you still have one working key, adding a spare remote is a relatively quick job. When every key is gone, the vehicle security system has to be handled differently because there's no working key to reference during programming. That adds time and complexity to the job. The lesson every GMC owner learns the hard way: get a spare made while you still have something working.

Q: Do aftermarket fobs work on the 2001 GMC Jimmy, or do I need OEM?

Aftermarket fobs work fine on these. The 2001 Jimmy is old enough that the remote system is not locked behind proprietary dealer hardware. As long as the replacement fob matches the factory FCC ID on the original, it will program the same way an OEM unit does. The thing to watch: buy from a seller who actually lists the FCC ID and confirms compatibility with your year and model. Generic listings sometimes pull the wrong fob for the application.

Q: My 2001 Jimmy starts fine but the remote stopped working. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. Start with the CR2032. These fobs see a lot of pocket time and the battery drains faster than people expect, especially in older fobs where the contacts have some age on them. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, try reprogramming the fob before you buy a replacement. On these older GM remotes, the fob can drop its pairing to the receiver module, which shows up as no response even though the battery is good.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 2001 Jimmy myself at home?

On some older GM trucks and SUVs from this era, there is an onboard procedure that lets you add a remote without any external tools, but it typically requires a currently working programmed key to initiate the sequence. If you still have one working fob or key, it may be worth looking into whether your specific build supports that sequence. If you have no working fob at all, the self-service route is closed and you need someone with programming equipment.

2001 GMC Jimmy Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in the Bancroft area of Spring Valley called me on a Saturday morning. He'd been fishing out near the boat launch and lost his only key somewhere between the dock and the gravel lot. Checked the boat, checked the cooler, checked every pocket. The 2001 GMC Jimmy was just sitting there and he was already thinking tow truck and a Monday dealer appointment.

I told him I could be there that afternoon. He sounded genuinely surprised.

When I pulled up, he was sitting on the tailgate of someone else's truck waiting. I got the Jimmy open without touching a thing he didn't want touched, decoded the lock, and cut a new key blade to match. Then I got into the remote programming sequence for the fob. On these older GMs, the process runs through the vehicle itself rather than a separate programmer for the remote portion, which keeps it clean and fast on site.

I cut him a spare on top of the main key so he wouldn't be back in this spot after the next fishing trip. The whole job, from pulling up in the lot to him driving out, was under an hour.

He mentioned the dealer quote he'd gotten in his head: tow plus the appointment plus the key, all stacking up into a number that made him wince. What he paid me was a fraction of that, and he didn't lose his weekend waiting for Monday.

GMC Jimmy Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2001 GMC Jimmy key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you do anything else. You can find aftermarket fobs online for not much money, but the fob alone does nothing until it's programmed to your specific truck. Buying the part is only half the job. With a 2001 Jimmy, you have an advantage over newer vehicles: the remote programming on these older GM systems doesn't require a dealer scan tool the way late-model trucks do. That keeps the overall cost down.
