I got a call from someone over in Lomas Santa Fe, Solana Beach. He was in a parking lot off Lomas Santa Fe Drive, standing next to his 2000 GMC Jimmy with a fob in one hand and a key blade in the other. The flip hinge had finally given out. The blade snapped free and stayed jammed in the ignition. The fob housing cracked at the pivot point, which is exactly where these older flip keys fail when the hinge wears thin and nobody catches it in time. When I got there, the first thing I did was pull the blade out of the ignition carefully so nothing got damaged deeper in the cylinder. Then I looked at the fob. The housing was wrecked but the chip inside was still intact. That mattered. Because the transponder chip survived, I could work with what was already there instead of running a full all-keys-lost procedure, which takes longer and costs more.
I decoded the lock, cut two new blades, and rebuilt the working internals into a new fob shell. Tested both keys at the ignition and verified the remote functions on each one before I packed up. The whole call took about 40 minutes.
He said the dealer had already given him a number over the phone, and it was a lot. He didn't end up needing to go that route.
