Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2018 GMC Yukon Xl Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was closing up at a brewery in El Cajon after her bartending shift and her purse was gone. Someone had taken it from behind the bar during the rush. Keys, wallet, phone, everything. She borrowed a coworker's phone, called the police, then her roommate, then me.

Her 2018 GMC Yukon XL was sitting in the lot with zero keys. The dealer told her roommate they could order a fob, but it would take three to five business days, the vehicle would need to be towed in, and they recommended clearing the old key out of the system since the stolen fob could still open the doors and start the engine. The combined estimate her roommate got was enough to make her stomach drop.

I got there that night. All-keys-lost is a different animal from adding a spare. When you add a key, the vehicle already trusts an existing fob and extends that trust to a new one. All-keys-lost means wiping the entire key memory clean so the stolen fob becomes useless. I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port, cleared the old data out of the body control module, and enrolled two new fobs from scratch. I also cut the emergency insert blade so she had a physical backup, decoded from the lock on site. Both fobs were working before the officer finished taking her statement in the parking lot.

She drove home that night. The stolen fob is dead to the car now. The dealer estimate involved a tow, a multi-day wait, and a number that hurt. She paid a fraction of that, on site, in the dark, before midnight.

The part she kept saying on the way out was that she didn't realize the locksmith could do it the same night. Most people don't.
