2019 Hyundai Kona Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call out of Spring Valley Village on a weekday evening. A mom had been at a pediatric clinic with her toddler, who was running a fever, and when she got back to the overflow lot her 2019 Kona would not respond. The start button was doing nothing. She tried the door handle, nothing. The fob felt dead in her hand.
It was past 6pm. The Hyundai dealer was closed.
I was about twenty minutes out when she called. I told her on the phone: try holding the fob flat against the start button. That backup start procedure is built into the system for exactly this situation, a fully dead fob battery. It did not work this time, which told me something beyond the battery was going on.
When I got there I opened the fob on site and found the CR2032 had corroded enough to damage the contact inside. That kind of corrosion can block the transponder from transmitting even when the battery tests with some voltage left. I replaced the fob, connected my programmer to the OBD port, enrolled the new key to the vehicle's immobilizer, and ran every function before I handed it back to her.
I also walked her through the backup start procedure herself, slowly, so she would remember it.
From her call to the engine running was just under 45 minutes. The dealer would have been a morning appointment and a bill she did not want to think about. She got her kid home and into bed.
That is the job. The technical part matters, but so does showing up when the dealer does not.
