2023 Hyundai Kona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2023 Kona?

The programming does not wear out. A properly registered fob stays paired to the vehicle unless the immobilizer is reset or the fob is physically damaged. Battery is the main maintenance item, and most owners get a year or two per cell with normal use. Shell quality is a separate conversation. Hyundai owners on forums have noted that the plastic housing on newer fobs can feel thin and chip with regular pocket carry.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. The work is covered under our warranty. That said, when a properly programmed fob stops working on a 2023 Kona, the cause is often on the vehicle side rather than the key itself. The immobilizer and the vehicle security system can lose sync with a fob after a software update or a module reset.

Q: I lost all my keys to my 2023 Kona. Can you still make a replacement, or does it have to go to the dealer?

All-keys-lost on the 2023 Kona is a job we handle on site. It does not have to go to the dealer. The process involves resetting the immobilizer through the diagnostic port and registering a new fob from scratch. Because the system has a built-in security delay during that reset, the job takes a little longer than a simple spare-key add, usually closer to 45 minutes.

Q: My 2023 Kona shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is new. What is going on?

A few things can cause this. First, confirm the battery is seated correctly and making clean contact with the terminals inside the fob housing. A new battery that is slightly off-position reads the same as a dead one. Beyond that, 2023 Kona owners have reported intermittent key-not-detected warnings that are not related to the fob at all.

2023 Hyundai Kona Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Carlton Hills is a neighborhood where people are moving early and coming back late. When a commuter is down to one key and it stops working right, the math on dealer wait time gets personal fast.

A Kona owner called me from the dentist's parking lot off Mast Boulevard in Santee. She had a Monday morning and a fob that the car had stopped recognizing. She had already called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest they could see her, parts availability unknown, and she would need to leave the car with them. She commutes every day. Thursday was not a real option.

I met her in the lot that same afternoon. Connected my diagnostic tool, ran the smart key registration through the OBD port, and verified that the immobilizer accepted the new fob. Tested all the functions, walked the doors, confirmed the vehicle started. The whole job ran about thirty minutes on site.

She had a working key before she left that parking lot. The dealer comparison came up at the end, almost as an afterthought. She had already done that math herself.

Hyundai Kona Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Hyundai vehicles?▼

We use verified OEM-spec blanks that are matched to your specific vehicle. This matters more than people expect. A fob that looks identical to the correct one can have different internal electronics, and if the transponder chip does not match what your car's immobilizer is expecting, the programming process fails before it starts. Aftermarket fobs sourced from generic online listings have a real failure rate on Hyundai vehicles. We have seen it come up repeatedly in locksmith forums.
