2021 Hyundai Kona Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
The call came from a body shop near the CSUSM Area in San Marcos. A Kona had come in for fender work, and when it was done, the shop realized they needed a spare key made while the car was there.
They called a locksmith. That locksmith got partway into programming, hit an error, and left. Just left. Now the car wouldn't accept any key at all, and the shop was stuck with a vehicle that ran fine mechanically but couldn't complete the security handshake to start.
The shop called me next.
When I got there, OBD communication with the immobilizer was blocked. A failed programming sequence with a power hiccup mid-write will do that. The module wasn't dead, it was just sitting in a fault state with corrupted registration data, and the standard diagnostic route wasn't going to touch it.
I pulled the module and went to bench. Read the data directly off the chip, identified the fault state, cleared it, and rebuilt the key registration from scratch. Once the module was back in and communication was restored, I ran the new fob through a clean registration sequence on the first attempt. It took.
Total time on site was about 80 minutes, most of that on the module work. The shop manager had already been quoted a multi-day dealer turnaround involving a flatbed. He said what I saved him, in time alone, was worth it. I didn't argue with that.
The previous locksmith wasn't necessarily bad at the job. Power interruptions mid-sequence happen. What matters is knowing how to recover from them, not just knowing how to run the tool when everything goes right.
