2024 Hyundai Kona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how is it different from a regular key?

Your 2024 Kona uses a smart key fob that does two separate things. It sends a radio signal for the remote functions - locking, unlocking, and the other buttons on the fob. It also carries a programmed transponder chip that the immobilizer reads when you go to start the car. Both halves have to work and have to be registered to your specific vehicle.

Q: What equipment does a mobile locksmith actually need to program a 2024 Kona key?

More than a basic OBD reader. The 2024 Kona requires professional immobilizer programming equipment capable of PIN extraction on current-generation Hyundai platforms. On these newer models that process involves a secondary read before the fob registration can even begin - tools like the Autel IM608 or comparable Xhorse units handle this when paired with the right adapters.

Q: I have one working fob but I want a second one added. Do I still need the same tools as an all-keys-lost job?

Yes, mostly. The 2024 Kona does not have an onboard self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. There is no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that adds a fob on this generation. Any time a new fob is being registered, the system needs to be accessed through the diagnostic port with professional equipment regardless of how many working keys you already have.

Q: My 2024 Kona is showing a key-not-detected warning but the fob is fine. What else could cause that?

A few things. Start with the CR2450 battery - not just whether it is present, but whether it is seated correctly and the contacts are clean. A slightly cocked cell will read intermittently. Beyond the battery, this warning can come from interference. Other fobs on the same keyring, certain aftermarket accessories near the start area, or even a phone case with a built-in wallet can create enough signal noise to confuse the antenna.

2024 Hyundai Kona Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Eden Gardens, over in Solana Beach, when a woman flagged me down from the parking lot next to the grooming salon. Her dog was already inside getting a bath, and she had maybe 25 minutes before pickup. She needed a spare smart key added to the 2024 Kona she'd had for about four months.

She had done her homework. VIN texted to me before I left, her ID ready, and she had her one working fob in hand. That combination - a known VIN, a working key, and confirmed ownership - is the difference between an add-a-key job and an all-keys-lost job. Add-a-key is faster every time.

I already had the correct fob blank prepped in the van. I pulled up alongside the Kona, connected to the OBD port, ran the PIN extraction sequence, then registered the new fob alongside her existing one. Tested every button, confirmed the immobilizer recognized both keys, and handed her the spare.

She was back inside with two minutes to spare before her dog came out.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment, on top of their key price. That part wasn't even the point for her. She just wanted it done before the dog finished his bath. We cleared that bar.

Hyundai Kona Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a scam locksmith before I get burned?▼

Three things. First, look for a real business name with a consistent address and verifiable Google and Yelp reviews. Scam operations cycle through dozens of names and phone numbers that all route to the same call center. Second, ask for a firm price over the phone for your specific vehicle. Any legitimate locksmith who works Hyundais regularly can give you a range before seeing the car. Refusing to quote is a stall tactic.
