I got a call out of Scripps Ranch on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner of a 2018 Jaguar F-Pace had already been through it before he found me.
He's a patent attorney, detail-oriented, and he had done his homework the wrong way first. Searched for a locksmith, clicked a sponsored ad, got a quote that sounded reasonable on the phone. The tech who showed up had a generic fob, got it to physically seat in the dash start switch, collected his money, and left. The car never started. The key entry device registered something but the immobilizer rejected it entirely. No start, no confirmation, nothing. The fob had no valid data paired to that vehicle. He was out a significant amount of money with zero to show for it.
First thing he asked when he called me was how to verify I was legitimate. That is the right question and I respect it every time I hear it. I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone. He pulled the state website while we were still talking and confirmed it before I drove out there.
When I arrived, I connected my JLR-capable diagnostic equipment and confirmed what I suspected. The previous tech had either skipped the programming procedure entirely or lacked the tools to complete it. The vehicle's security system had no valid key registered to it at that point.
I sourced a proper replacement fob with the correct factory FCC ID for his vehicle, ran the full programming sequence through the diagnostic port, and confirmed all five buttons were live. Touch entry on both front handles, the liftgate release, the lock and unlock, push-to-start, all of it working.
He watched the whole thing from about three feet away. When the dash stopped warning him and the car started clean on the first press, he was quiet for a second and then said "that's it?"
