The dealer's version of that same timeline looks different: tow the car in, wait for a service slot, actual programming takes about the same amount of time once they're in the bay, but the total elapsed time from your call to driving away is usually one to three days. My F-Pace is showing a key-not-detected warning but the fob is right there. What's going on?

A few things can cause that. Start with the CR2032 inside the fob. A weak battery can trigger exactly this symptom even if the key worked fine yesterday. The fob will still unlock the doors at close range sometimes, but the vehicle doesn't see it cleanly enough to authorize the start sequence.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't fix it, the next thing to check is whether the car recently had a dead 12V battery or a jump start. A full 12V drop can cause the vehicle security system to lose its key pairing state or put the key verification module into a fault condition. That's not a fob problem at that point, it's a module communication issue that needs a diagnostic scan to sort out. That's the kind of thing I check on site before touching any fobs.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and have someone program it, or does it have to come from Jaguar?

You can buy an aftermarket or used blank fob, but there are two things to verify before you do. First, confirm the factory FCC ID on your existing fob matches the blank you're buying. The F-Pace has gone through more than one fob generation and they are not cross-compatible even when the button count and shape look the same. Second, a used fob that was already programmed to another vehicle needs to be cleared before it can be paired to yours. Some blanks sold online are advertised as ready to program but arrive already tied to a donor vehicle.

The programming itself cannot be done without the right diagnostic equipment regardless of where the fob came from. There is no button sequence or ignition-cycle trick on this system.
