2004 Kia Sedona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I had a key made at a hardware store and it turns but feels wrong. What is going on?

Hardware store cuts on the 2004 Sedona are hit or miss. The machine reads an existing worn key, and if that key was already rounded down from years of use, the copy inherits every one of those worn edges. What you get is a key that sort of works, catches in the cylinder, or turns hard in one direction. Over time that accelerates wear on the ignition wafers.

Q: Does the 2004 Kia Sedona key have any hidden blade or backup entry feature?

The 2004 Sedona key is already the blade. There is no fob, no smart key housing, no buried emergency insert. It is a metal key that goes in the lock. Lose it and you are locked out the old-fashioned way, which is exactly why a spare cut and kept somewhere safe is worth doing while I am already on site.

Q: My 2004 Sedona ignition is getting stiff and the key is hard to turn. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Usually both, and they feed each other. On these vans the ignition cylinder uses a set of wafers that wear gradually. A slightly worn key accelerates that process, and a worn cylinder starts chewing up otherwise decent keys. Owners on the forums for early 2000s Kia vans mention the ignition getting notchy somewhere in the high-mileage range, sometimes to the point where the key gets stuck in the accessories position or will not return to off cleanly.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for a 2004 Sedona on-site, or does it have to go to a shop?

On-site, no question. The 2004 Sedona is exactly the kind of job mobile locksmith work was built for. I carry the blanks, I carry the cutting equipment, and I can decode a lock or pull the key code without moving the vehicle anywhere. Whether it is sitting in a parking lot off Highland Avenue or in a driveway in Downtown National City, I come to it. The whole job typically takes under twenty minutes once I am there.

2004 Kia Sedona Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy running a record shop off the main drag in Downtown National City. He had a 2004 Kia Sedona, used it to haul stock, make runs, the usual van life. He lost his only key somewhere between the shop and a swap meet and needed a replacement the same day.

First thing he asked was whether the new key would be as good as going to the dealer. Fair question. He had a business to run and no time for a week-long wait.

The 2004 Sedona is one of the cleaner jobs in my kit. The key is a standard mechanical blade, no remote, no transponder enrollment, no module reset. I decoded the lock right there in the lot, cut the key on the van, and had him turning the ignition inside of fifteen minutes. He sat in the driver seat with the door open, turned the key a few times like he was making sure it was real, then just nodded.

He asked about a spare. Cut him a second one on the spot.

The dealer route would have meant a tow, a wait, and a bill that made no sense for a job this simple. He kept that money in his pocket, which is exactly where it belonged.

Kia Sedona Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on a 2004 Kia Sedona?▼

On a 2004 Sedona, all-keys-lost is actually one of the simpler calls I get. This van uses a mechanical key with no transponder enrollment, so there is no immobilizer reset, no PIN retrieval, and no programming sequence. I decode the lock or work from the key code, cut a new blade, and you are back in business. No tow required, no dealer appointment, no waiting around.
