Out in Casa de Oro, I got a call from a guy who had pulled over near one of the overlooks off Campo Road. He was doing a long road trip in his 2007 Kia Sedona, loaded with gear, and somewhere along the way the key blade had snapped. Half of it was still in the door lock.

Another locksmith had already told him the lock cylinder would need to be drilled out. New cylinder, new key, and a tow back toward El Cajon. He was looking at a long wait and a bill that made him wince.

I got there, assessed the break, and extracted the fragment using a pick tool without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. Once the piece was out, I decoded the lock by reading each wafer position directly. That gave me the exact cut pattern I needed.

I cut a new key blade to match, then programmed the transponder chip through the OBD port so the immobilizer would accept it. No drilling, no cylinder swap, no tow. The van started up, the lock turned clean, and he was back on the road in under an hour.

Destructive entry is always a last resort. Most of the time it is just not necessary.
