When you turn the key to the start position, a coil built into the ignition collar reads that chip wirelessly. If the chip ID matches what the immobilizer has stored, the engine is allowed to run. If there is no chip, a dead chip, or one that was never programmed to your vehicle, the engine either refuses to start or cranks and immediately shuts off. No fuel, no spark, full stop. That is the system working as designed.

The remote buttons on the key head are separate from all of that. They talk to the body control module for lock and unlock. You can have a key that locks and unlocks the doors just fine but still dies on the ignition because the transponder side was never programmed. They are two different functions in the same physical key.
