2014 Kia Sedona
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2014 Kia Sedona Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown IB, late afternoon. A family had pulled into a parking area near the waterfront in their 2014 Kia Sedona when the key blade snapped. Not bent, not worn down. Snapped clean at the shoulder, half of it still inside the door lock cylinder.

The owner had already called one locksmith who told him the cylinder was done. Drill it out, replace the whole lock, cut a new key, program the chip. He'd gotten a number that made him wince and then he called me instead.

I got there and looked at the break. Clean fracture, fragment sitting just inside the keyway. No rotation damage to the wafers. I used a broken key extractor to work the fragment out without touching the wafer stack. Took about four minutes. When it came out, I had what I needed to read the cuts.

I decoded the lock right there, cut a new key blade to match, and programmed the transponder chip to the vehicle through the OBD port. The whole job took less than an hour. The family loaded back into the van and headed out.

No drilling. No new cylinder. No tow truck to a dealer. The other guy's plan wasn't wrong exactly, it was just the most destructive path taken first, and that's never where I start.
