Then I transferred the salvaged chip into a new fob shell and verified the remote functions were all responding correctly before I packed up.
Start to finish was right around 40 minutes. She went from no usable keys to two fully working ones without a tow, without a dealer appointment, and without waiting three days for a part to be ordered. The dealer comparison came up in conversation and I kept it short: she saved a good chunk.
If your fob housing is cracked or the blade is broken, do not throw anything away. The chip inside can still be the difference between a simple rebuild and a longer job.
