I got a call from a woman in the Westwood area of Rancho Bernardo. She had a 2023 Lexus RZ, all-electric, and her smart key had stopped being detected by the car. She was standing in the parking lot at the tennis club and the door handles weren't waking up when she walked toward the vehicle.
She tried holding the fob right against the door handle. Nothing. Then she tried the start button area. The dash showed a key-not-detected warning and the car wouldn't power on.
I drove out, pulled up next to her in the lot, and started with the basics before touching anything on the programming side. Popped the fob open, checked the CR2032. It was the original battery -- the RZ had been delivered about a year earlier and she had never swapped it. The battery was reading low on my tester. Replaced it on the spot, reseated the contact, and she could get into the car.
But I didn't stop there. The RZ runs a full smart key enrollment through the diagnostic port, and with an electric vehicle there are some nuances -- the system uses the 12-volt auxiliary battery to power the body electronics and the immobilizer communication even though the main drive battery runs the motors. I connected to the OBD port to verify the fob was still properly enrolled and hadn't dropped registration, which can happen on these when the auxiliary battery gets critically low. Everything was clean. The fob was still paired.
Then I tested. All four buttons, passive entry on every door handle, the start button from the driver seat and passenger seat, and range from across the parking lot at several angles. Solid across the board.
She told me she had called the dealer first and they wanted to schedule her out several days and weren't sure if it was the key or something else on the vehicle side. I was done and packing up my bag while they were still figuring out an appointment time.
