The intermittent warning she had been seeing was almost certainly a battery contact issue in the original fob. I cleaned it, reseated the CR2032, and it behaved perfectly after that.
Done in one visit. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and she left with a working spare she did not have before. The technology in these fobs is real. The idea that only a dealer can work with it is not.
