🔧 PRO TIP
The 2006 Mazda 5 fob uses a CR2025, not the CR2032 that gets swapped in by mistake more often than you'd think. They're close enough in diameter that a CR2032 will seat, but it's too thick and puts pressure on the battery contacts, which causes intermittent signal loss that looks exactly like a dying fob or a programming issue. If an owner tells you the fob works sometimes and not others, ask them when they last changed the battery and whether whoever did it grabbed the right cell. Also worth knowing: this is a 4-button remote entry setup, not a proximity smart key in the modern push-button sense. The 2006 Mazda 5 still uses an ignition cylinder. The fob handles lock, unlock, and remote functions, but the key blade goes into the column to start the car. That distinction matters when someone calls saying their "smart key stopped working" and they're worried they can't start the vehicle. The transponder in the key blade is what the immobilizer reads. The fob is separate. Two different failure points, two different fixes.

2006 Mazda 5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Alpine Village on a Tuesday afternoon. He was parked in the lot near his office and his fob had stopped locking the doors. He could still start the car fine, turn the key, drive it. But the remote buttons were dead and he'd been manually locking up for a week, which he said felt ridiculous.

He'd already bought a replacement fob online. Had it in his hand when he called me. He just needed it programmed, he said.

I came out to the lot and looked at what he had. The fob body matched. Before I touched the programming equipment, I asked him to pop the back of his existing fob so I could look at the battery. CR2032. Someone had swapped it at some point, probably at a gas station or a grocery store checkout counter, and grabbed the wrong size.

I put a CR2025 in the original fob, tested it against the car. Locked. Unlocked. All four buttons working. His original fob was fine. Never needed replacing.

He appreciated that I didn't just take his word for it and start billing. The fob he bought online is sitting in his glove box now as a spare, which honestly isn't a bad outcome. When he does need it programmed someday, he knows who to call.

The whole stop was under 20 minutes. A dealer visit for the same complaint would have cost him a day and more money than the job was worth.

Mazda 5 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2006 Mazda 5 key replacement take?
Most of the time, well under an hour once I'm at your vehicle. The 2006 Mazda 5 has a transponder key with a separate remote fob, and each piece gets handled on site. Cutting the key blade to your vehicle and programming the transponder to the immobilizer is the core of the job. The fob programming is its own step. If there's a security wait built into the process, that adds time, but you're still looking at a realistic 30 to 45 minutes for a full replacement start to finish. Dealers have reported times of an hour or more once you factor in check-in, paperwork, and them pulling your vehicle into a bay. My service van is already set up for this specific job, so there's no waiting room involved.
