2009 Mazda 5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was already in the Solana Beach area, finishing up a job near Eden Gardens, when the call came in. A woman who runs a vintage furniture booth at a weekend market had lost her only key for her 2009 Mazda 5.
She had called the dealer earlier that week and been told smart keys were a dealer-only procedure, that she would need a weekday appointment and a tow if she could not drive the car in herself. She had been sitting on that information for a few days, not happy about it.
She was parked in the same lot where she works, which made things easy for me. I met her between customers browsing her booth.
The 2009 Mazda 5 fob is a four-button remote with a transponder that turns in the ignition. Programming requires going through the diagnostic port with the right equipment. I connected, walked through the immobilizer registration sequence, and got the new fob accepted by the vehicle. Then the part that actually matters: I tested every function in front of her. Lock, unlock, the other two buttons, and a full ignition start cycle to confirm the transponder read was solid.
Start to finish, she did not wait long. The car stayed in her lot the whole time. She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted, and she did not lose a weekday to a service appointment.
The dealer information she got was not accurate for her situation. It happens more than it should.
