A guy in Winding Walk called me from the commuter lot in Chula Vista at about 7 in the morning. His 2010 Mazda 5 was sitting dead in the lot and he had already missed one train.
The fob had gone completely unresponsive overnight, and when he pulled out the emergency insert blade and tried the door cylinder, it barely moved. He figured the whole lock was broken. He called the Mazda dealer. First available appointment was three days out.

I was in the lot in 35 minutes. The door cylinder was not broken -- just bone dry from years of zero manual use. A little work and some lubricant and it turned fine. I got inside, pulled up key status through the diagnostic port, and both fobs were still registered in the system. Nothing had been lost, nothing needed reprogramming. The only thing wrong was a dead CR2025 and a neglected cylinder.
Swapped the battery, made sure it was seated correctly, verified both fobs were reading cleanly, walked every button, checked the door handles, confirmed the ignition was seeing the key. The whole thing took maybe 25 minutes including the cylinder work.
He caught the next train. I was already on the freeway by the time it pulled out of the station. The dealer appointment he had booked -- he texted me later to say he canceled it.
