1997 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 1997 Mazda Protege actually use?

A straight metal key cut to the car. No remote, no fob, no transponder chip. It turns in the ignition cylinder and that's the whole system. There are no buttons, no battery to replace, nothing to program.

Q: How does a mobile locksmith compare to the dealer for a 1997 Protege key?

The dealer process usually means towing the car in if you're locked out, waiting for a service appointment, and paying shop labor rates for what is a relatively simple mechanical job on a car this age. A mobile locksmith comes to you, works in your driveway or parking lot, and gets it done in one visit. No tow bill, no waiting room.

Q: Can I make a copy of my 1997 Protege key at a hardware store?

You can, if the key is in good shape and you have the original. Hardware store duplicators work fine on basic metal keys like this one. The problem shows up when the original is worn. A machine copying a worn key just produces a worn copy, and that new key may work today and start giving you grief in six months.

Q: My 1997 Protege key turns but the car won't start. Is that a key problem?

On a 1997 Protege, if the key turns freely and the ignition feels normal, the key itself is probably not the issue. This car has no transponder and no immobilizer to reject the key electronically. If it cranks but won't fire, you're looking at fuel, spark, or a starting system issue, not the key. If it won't turn at all or feels binding, that's either a worn key, a worn cylinder, or the steering column lock engaging.

1997 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Rancho Del Oro called me on a weekday afternoon. He'd broken his only key for his 1997 Mazda Protege, snapped it right in the ignition cylinder. Half the key was still in there.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to have it towed in, said they'd need time to look at it, and the number they gave him for the work wasn't small. He wasn't thrilled about any of that.

I pulled up to his place with my extraction tools and a key decoder. Got the broken piece out of the cylinder without pulling the whole column, which is the part people don't expect. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the cut and made him a new key on site.

He tested it himself. Turned it over twice, just to be sure. It started clean both times.

The whole job was done in his driveway. No tow, no waiting at a service counter. He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted, and he had his car back the same afternoon he called.

Mazda Protege Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement feel expensive even for an older car like the 1997 Protege?▼

It doesn't have to be. The 1997 Protege takes a mechanical key with no chip and no programming involved. The cost of replacement comes down to two things: cutting the key accurately and, if you're locked out, the service call itself. There's no programming fee, no security system enrollment, none of that. What you're paying for is the skill to decode the lock or extract a broken key and cut a working replacement on the spot.
