2000 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Mazda Protege actually use?

A plain metal key cut to the vehicle. No remote. No buttons. No fob battery to replace. It operates the ignition and the door locks mechanically. That's the whole system for this year and model. If someone is quoting you for chip programming or remote pairing on this car, that doesn't apply here.

Q: How long does key replacement take compared to going to the dealer?

When I come to you in Rolling Hills Ranch, the job on a 2000 Protege typically runs well under thirty minutes. There's no programming wait, no timed security sequence. I cut the key, test it in the ignition and door locks, and that's it. The dealer route on a car this age usually means dropping it off, waiting for a service advisor to work it into the queue, and coming back later.

Q: I lost all my keys to my 2000 Protege. Can a new key still be made without an original?

Yes. This is a pretty common situation on cars this age. A locksmith can pick or decode the door lock or ignition cylinder to get the key code, then cut a working key directly from that reading. No original required. It takes a bit longer than duplicating from an existing key, but it's a fully solved problem. You don't need to tow the car anywhere.

Q: My 2000 Protege key turns hard and sometimes doesn't want to come out of the ignition. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, but start with the key. A worn key blank that's been duplicated a few times, especially from a hardware store cut, can be slightly off in profile and cause exactly that binding feeling. A key cut from a fresh blank to proper spec will often fix it. If a correctly cut key still binds or won't release cleanly, then you're looking at the ignition cylinder itself, which is a separate job.

2000 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy over in Rolling Hills Ranch, Chula Vista. His 2000 Mazda Protege was sitting in the driveway and he had one key left, worn down to the point where it was getting stubborn in the ignition. He wanted a spare before it got worse.

He'd already stopped at a hardware store and walked out with nothing. The person at the counter looked at his key, shrugged, and told him it might be a Mazda thing and to try the dealer.

The dealer told him to come in, leave the car, and plan on waiting. He didn't want to do that. A neighbor mentioned my name.

I came out to him. Brought the right blank, cut a key on site, tested it in the ignition and both door locks. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes including the drive up his street.

He made a comment about how the dealer made it sound like a bigger production than it was. I didn't argue. Some jobs really are that simple when you bring the right equipment to the right place.

Mazda Protege Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Mazda dealer to get a replacement key for a 2000 Protege?▼

No. This generation Protege uses a standard metal key, so a mobile locksmith can handle the whole job on site. There's no dealer-only system involved, no appointments to schedule, no leaving the car somewhere for hours. A locksmith with the right blank and cutting equipment comes to you, cuts the key, and you test it before they leave.
