2002 Mazda Protege
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Mazda to the dealer?

Not for this one. The 2002 Protege uses a standard mechanical key, so the whole job happens at the car. I decode the lock, cut the blade, and you're driving. Dealers often default to "tow it in" because that's their process, not because the job actually requires a shop. A mobile locksmith handles it wherever the car is parked. Save the tow fee.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership, either your registration or your title. I also verify the VIN from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker to confirm the vehicle before I cut anything. Same standard a dealer would use, but handled on site in a few minutes instead of at a service counter. Pretty simple process.

Q: I only have one key for my 2002 Protege and I want a spare before I lose it. Is that something you can do on the spot?

That's actually the easiest version of this job. If you have the original key in hand, I duplicate it directly. No decoding the lock, no pulling a key code, just a clean copy cut from your existing key. Takes maybe ten minutes. Getting a spare made while you still have a working key is a lot cheaper and faster than calling me after you've lost the only one.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't come out smoothly. Is that a key problem or an ignition problem?

Could be either, but on a 2002 Protege with 20-plus years of use, worn ignition cylinders are common. A key that's been duplicated a few times can also drift slightly from the original cuts, and that extra friction accelerates cylinder wear over time. If the original key turns fine but a copy binds, the copy is the problem. If both bind, the cylinder is likely worn. I can tell the difference on site.

2002 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in the Viejas Area, near the casino side of Alpine, a guy called me about his 2002 Mazda Protege. He had lost his only key somewhere on a trail and had no spare. His first call had been to a Mazda dealer, who told him to have the car towed in. He wasn't thrilled about that.

I pulled up to where the Protege was parked. He was standing next to it looking at it like it personally owed him an apology.

The job itself was about as clean as it gets. I decoded the door lock, read the wafer positions, and cut a replacement blade on site. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Fit and turned perfectly on the first try.

He asked me twice if there was anything else I needed to do, like plug something in. There wasn't. Key in hand, car running, done in under 20 minutes in a dirt pullout off the highway.

The dealer tow-and-replace route would have cost him a tow fee plus whatever the shop charged for the key. He paid a fraction of that and didn't move the car an inch.

Mazda Protege Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I am locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call me and I come to wherever the Protege is sitting in Alpine or the Viejas Area. I carry the key blanks and decoding tools to handle this on site. No tow truck, no dealer appointment, no waiting around. For a 2002 Protege with no key at all, I decode the lock directly and cut a working replacement right there. One call is all it takes.
