2001 Mazda Protege Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Bressi Ranch, I got a call from a guy who had locked his only key inside his 2001 Mazda Protege. He was standing in a parking lot, and his first instinct was to call the dealership.
They told him he would need to tow it in and have a new key made through their service department. He was already calculating the tow cost before he thought to search for a mobile locksmith.
I showed up with the tools, got the door open without a scratch, and then cut him a replacement key right there on the spot. He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, which a lot of people find oddly satisfying.
What struck him was how simple the job actually was on this car. No scan tool, no computer hookup, no waiting for a parts order. The 2001 Protege is a generation where the key is just a key. Cut it right and it works.
He mentioned the dealer estimate almost as an afterthought. He had been bracing for a bill that would have covered a tow and a wait and whatever labor rate they charge that week. He paid a fraction of that, never left the parking lot, and drove home inside the hour.
