I got a call one evening from a couple parked at a motel off the west side of Escondido. They were on a road trip, passing through, and their only key had stopped being recognized by the car. The dash was giving them a key-not-detected warning and the push-button wouldn't respond. They had no spare.
They'd already called the dealer. The dealer wanted the car towed in, had no availability until the following afternoon, and the quote they were given made them pause. On top of that, towing a car to the dealer from a motel is its own problem when you're from out of town and don't know a single person locally.
They found me online and called that same night.
I drove out to the motel lot, met them at the car, and got to work. The Cube's Intelligent Key system gets programmed through the OBD port with diagnostic equipment. I connected up, went through the registration procedure, and had a new fob paired to the car and the blade cut to match the door. The whole thing ran about 30 to 35 minutes on site.
They didn't need a tow. They didn't need to wait until the next afternoon. They didn't need to call anyone else. They drove out the next morning on schedule.
The dealer comparison came up, as it always does. They'd been quoted a number that made the call to me feel like an obvious decision in hindsight. I don't post prices here, but the difference was meaningful. That part's almost never the main thing anyway. The main thing was that they were stuck, and then they weren't.
