I got a call from someone parked at a spot near Cardiff-by-the-Sea, one of those side streets just off the main drag in Encinitas. His 2014 Cube had been sitting there while he grabbed food. When he came back out, the fob wouldn't unlock the doors. He got in with the mechanical key tucked inside the fob, tried the start button, and the dash lit up with a key-not-detected warning. Engine went nowhere.

I told him probably, eventually, but they'd have billed him for the diagnostic time, the programming, and whatever else landed on the ticket while the car sat in their lot. He said he'd gotten a quote from them a few weeks earlier for a spare key that was way more than what I charged him. He hadn't bothered because of the price. I told him having a spare on a single-key vehicle like this is worth doing while I'm already there.
He let me make the spare on the spot.
