I got a call from a guy near Moonlight Beach, parked close to the volleyball courts on D Street. He had his 2008 Versa SL, the hatchback version, and his Intelligent Key fob had stopped unlocking the doors from more than about three feet away. Close enough to touch the car and it would respond. He had already put in a new CR2032. Same problem.
I pulled up next to him and we popped the fob open on my work surface. The battery was seated fine and the cell voltage tested good. What I found was a hairline crack along the circuit board near one of the contact points, the kind of damage you get from dropping the fob on pavement a few times. The board itself was compromised.
New fob shell with a fresh board, battery transferred over, then the programming sequence through the OBD port to register it to the vehicle's immobilizer. After that I did what I always do: walked the full distance test, checked every button, locked and unlocked from across the parking lot, and ran three clean starts to confirm the transponder side was reading correctly every time.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days for a parts order before they could even start. He was standing in a parking lot near the beach with one partially working key. That is not a situation where waiting days makes sense. The whole job was done in under an hour, on site, for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted.
