A family in Del Mar Village called me on a weekday afternoon. They were back from a camping trip up in the hills outside town and had come home to find their 2012 Versa SL sitting in the driveway completely unresponsive. No fob. They'd left it on a picnic table the night before and it was gone by morning. They had no spare, and without the fob the push-button start system wouldn't even acknowledge the car was occupied. It just sat there.
They'd already called the Nissan dealer. The service advisor told them the car needed to be towed in, the immobilizer would need to be reset, and they were looking at a wait of at least two days for parts. They called me after that.
All-keys-lost on an Intelligent Key Versa is not a turn-the-key-a-few-times job. The immobilizer has to be accessed through the OBD port, old key data cleared, and new fob data written in before the car will accept any key at all. I backed up the relevant module data first, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence and registered a new fob on site. The whole process took about 45 minutes in their driveway.
The car started. They stood there watching the push-button start work like it was supposed to and looked a little relieved and a little annoyed at the same time, which is a normal reaction when something expensive and stressful turns out to be fixable in under an hour. The dealer route would have added a tow, a two-day wait, and a bill that was considerably heavier. None of that happened.
