I got a call from a delivery driver over in Rancho Del Rey. He was parked at a smog shop off East H Street, trying to squeeze a job in between runs, and his 2010 Versa SL was not cooperating.
He had already been through it once. Called one of those $39 Google ads, a guy showed up, took a while, charged him well over four hundred dollars, and when it was done the key would start the car but every button on the fob was dead. Lock, unlock, nothing. He'd been manually using the door lock for weeks.
When he found me he asked the right question: how do I know you're actually licensed? I gave him my BSIS license number on the phone and told him to look it up on the state site while we talked. He did. That seemed to settle it.
I drove out to him in Rancho Del Rey instead of making him deal with a tow. The issue was that the previous guy had only addressed part of the job. The fob had been paired to start the car but the remote functions were never properly registered. On the Versa SL's Intelligent Key setup, the transponder side and the remote functions go through the same programming sequence and both have to complete cleanly or you end up with exactly what he had: starts, but dead buttons.
I ran the full sequence with my programmer, verified all four buttons, walked the lock and unlock on both doors, and confirmed the key-not-detected warning was gone from the cluster. Took about twenty minutes on site.
He paid exactly what I quoted him. He mentioned the dealer had given him a number that made him wince just thinking about it. That part was an afterthought by then.
