Mt. Helix sits up in the hills above La Mesa, and the driveways up there can be steep and tight. Getting a tow truck in is its own problem before you even start talking about the key.
A swing-shift electrician called me from his driveway one night. His only fob had stopped being recognized by the car. Push the start button, nothing. The dash was showing a key warning, and he'd already swapped the CR2032 twice thinking that was it. He'd looked up tow rates to the dealer and was trying to figure out how to rearrange his whole week around not having a car.

When I got there, I connected my programmer to the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Nissan intelligent key system. The sequence handles the immobilizer reset, clears the old fob data, and enrolls the new key from scratch. His five-button fob also has an emergency mechanical insert blade, so I cut that to his vehicle as well while I was there. Start to finish in the driveway, around 11:30 at night.
The part that got him was that it worked at all. He had already mentally committed to losing two days to a tow and a dealer appointment. He drove to work that night.
What the dealer would have charged was a lot more, and that's before adding a tow bill on top.
