Out in Eden Gardens, Solana Beach, I got a call from a fleet manager running a small pool of work trucks. He had a 2014 Ram 3500 that looked like it had been through a job site demolition. The key fob housing was cracked clean down the middle and wrapped in electrical tape to hold it together. The rubber on the buttons had worn through to bare plastic. I transferred the internals into a new housing, cut a fresh blade to match his locks, verified the remote functions were working, and handed it back to him. Truck started, doors locked and unlocked, everything normal.
He had two more trucks in similar shape. Same story on both -- electronics intact, housings destroyed. All three done on site, in the parking area near his shop.
When I told him what the total came to for all three, he just looked at me for a second. It was less than the dealer had quoted for one.
