2017 Ram 3500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do I need to tow my Ram 3500 to the dealer for key work?

No. I come to you. Dealers will push the tow option, especially on an all-keys-lost situation. And towing a 3500 isn't cheap. These are long, heavy trucks. A flatbed that handles them costs noticeably more than a standard tow, and then you're still waiting in a dealer queue after that. I do the cutting, programming, and immobilizer work at the vehicle. The truck stays where it is.

Q: What do I need to prove I own the vehicle before you can make a key?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership. Registration or title works. I also verify the VIN directly from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker on your 3500 to confirm I'm working the right vehicle. That's the same standard a dealer uses, sometimes more involved actually. Some dealers require a separate trip to the parts department with your ID and registration before they'll release the security PIN needed for key work.

Q: The fob buttons stopped working but the truck still starts. What's going on?

Almost always the fob battery. On the 3500 fob, a weak battery will drop the remote functions first. Lock, unlock, and remote commands fade out before the transponder signal does, because the immobilizer side needs less power to operate. So you get this odd window where the truck starts fine but the buttons do nothing. Swap the battery first. If the buttons come back, you're done.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with equipment?

You need equipment. The 2017 Ram 3500 does not have a driver-accessible self-programming sequence for adding a new fob. The immobilizer enrollment requires a diagnostic tool that can communicate with the vehicle security system directly. If you bought the fob thinking you'd handle it yourself, you didn't waste your money as long as you bought the right part for your vehicle. You just need the programming step done by someone with the right tools.

2017 Ram 3500 Emergency Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

The RV storage yard off Twin Oaks Valley Road near the CSUSM Area is the kind of place where trucks sit for weeks between uses. That stretch of time is rough on fobs. People toss them in center consoles, they bounce around, the housings crack.

A retired teacher called me about her 3500. She'd gone to pull the truck out for a trip and noticed the fob housing had split down the middle from being dropped on concrete at some point. The emergency blade inside was barely hanging on. She'd tried the dealer first. They told her the only option was a full fob replacement. She wasn't thrilled about that answer, so she went looking for another one.

I met her at the yard. Before anything else, I checked whether the electronics inside the cracked housing were still communicating. They were. The fob was structurally wrecked but functionally intact. The actual problem was just broken plastic.

I transferred her working internals into a fresh replacement housing, verified the blade seated correctly, and tested every function at the truck. Everything worked. No programming needed because the electronics never changed.

She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted for a complete fob replacement. And the whole job happened right there in the gravel lot while she packed for her trip.

Ram 3500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I'm locked out with no spare key. Can you come to me?▼

Yes. Call me and I'll come directly to wherever you are in San Marcos, including the CSUSM Area. I carry the tools and blanks to handle the 3500 on site. One thing worth knowing on this truck: if the fob battery is completely dead, the door handle won't respond the way you're used to. There's a physical way to get in using the emergency blade hidden in the fob housing.
