2022 Ram 3500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming actually take once you're at my truck?

For a 2022 Ram 3500, adding a key where at least one working key exists typically runs 20 to 35 minutes on site. The gateway in this truck requires the right diagnostic access before programming can even begin, so there's a handshake step that adds a bit of time compared to older Rams. All-keys-lost takes longer. The security system reset has a timed cycle built in, and you can't rush it.

Q: Can you get the job done faster than going to the dealer?

The programming step itself takes roughly the same amount of time regardless of who does it. The difference is everything around it. The dealer adds: calling to check parts availability, scheduling an appointment, dropping the truck off, waiting for a service writer, waiting for a tech to get to it, and then waiting for the parts counter if a new fob has to be ordered.

Q: My 2022 Ram 3500 fob works fine up close but the range has gotten really short. What causes that?

Short range before any obvious failure is one of the more common complaints on late-model Ram owner forums, and it usually comes down to one of three things. First, the CR2032 is low. A battery that still works for basic unlock can be too weak to throw a strong signal across a parking lot. Swap it and retest before anything else.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2022 Ram 3500. Can I program it myself or do I need someone with a tool?

You need a tool. There is no self-programming sequence for a 2022 Ram 3500 smart key. The fob has to be registered to the vehicle's security system through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment. The aftermarket fob you bought may be a compatible shell and work fine once it's programmed. That part is worth checking when you call.

2022 Ram 3500 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

San Ysidro on a Saturday has its own rhythm, and the Beyer Blvd Corridor is busy whether or not the rest of the city is moving. I was already heading that direction when the call came in.

A tournament referee working the soccer complex had a problem. His 2022 Ram 3500 smart fob had cracked along the seam, and the key was stuck in a half-functional state. He had games to officiate all afternoon and couldn't lose the day. The dealer was closed. He found me.

I pulled up between matches. The housing had split at the seam, the kind of thing that happens when the fob gets dropped or squeezed wrong in a pocket, and the internal board had shifted enough that the electronics weren't making clean contact. The blade was also working loose from the assembly.

I transferred his internals into a fresh housing, seated the board properly, verified the CR2032 was good, and ran the programming through the OBD port to confirm the fob was properly paired to the truck's security system. Three clean starts. Every button confirmed. The truck didn't hesitate once.

He was back on the field for the early afternoon game. The dealer, had they been open, would have had him waiting until Monday and paying considerably more for the same result.

Ram 3500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a Ram 3500 key after hours or on a weekend?▼

Most dealer service departments are closed weekends or stop taking key jobs by early afternoon on Saturday. Sunday is nearly always a no. If you lose or damage your only key on a Saturday night in San Ysidro, you're looking at a tow, a wait, and a Monday appointment minimum. That's a real problem when the 3500 is a work truck. Contractors, fleet operators, and anyone running a schedule can't absorb a two-day delay because a dealer keeps banker's hours.
