I was parked up near the Poway Business Park finishing notes on another job when the call came in. A mom in a hospital parking lot, kid just discharged, 8pm, fob completely unresponsive.
She had already tried the obvious stuff. New-ish battery, she thought. Pressed the button standing right next to the car. Nothing on the door handles, nothing from the start button. She found the backup procedure in her phone's manual app and tried holding the fob to the start button area. Still nothing.
I got there and the first thing I did was crack the fob open to check the CR2450. It wasn't corroded, but it was the wrong cell -- a CR2032 someone had swapped in, sitting off-angle and barely making contact. Popped in a proper CR2450, seated it clean, and tried the backup start procedure again. The car woke right up.
She didn't need a new fob at all. She needed the right battery seated correctly.
I still ran through every function before I packed up. All five buttons, door handle touch response, the start button, the whole loop. The kid was asleep in the back seat by the time I was done. She had one less thing to deal with that night, and it cost her a fraction of what a morning dealer visit would have run.
That is the part of this job I don't talk about enough. Sometimes the fix is simple. You still have to show up and do it right.
