I got a call from a tire shop out in San Luis Rey, Oceanside. Not the customer calling - the shop calling on the customer's behalf.
The setup was already a mess before I showed up. Another locksmith had been out to program a replacement smart fob on a 2026 bZ4X. The programming attempt failed partway through, the immobilizer went into a fault state, and now the car wouldn't accept any key at all. The other locksmith packed up and left. The car was sitting in the tire shop bay, not going anywhere.
When a prior failed attempt corrupts the key registration process on a system like this, standard OBD-level programming is often locked out. The module won't respond normally because it flagged the incomplete sequence. That's the wall the first guy hit.
I brought bench-level tools that can communicate directly with the security module outside of normal OBD channels. I pulled the module, read the security data directly, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration clean. Then I programmed the new fob through a proper sequence on the first attempt. The car came up, recognized the key, started without complaint.
Total time on site was about 90 minutes. The customer had already been told by the dealer that this would mean a flatbed, a multi-day turnaround, and a bill that would make anyone wince. He saved a good chunk going the mobile route, even after the added complexity of cleaning up the first locksmith's incomplete attempt.
I don't say that to pile on whoever was out here first. These vehicles are new enough that not everyone has the tools for the failure case. I carry the bench equipment specifically because the failure case is where the job actually gets interesting.
