Often, yes. The 2004 Echo fob houses the transponder chip and the remote electronics together in one unit. If the blade snaps but the fob body is intact, the chip and remote side are usually still fine. I can transfer the working guts into a new compatible shell and cut a fresh blade to your vehicle, which saves you from a full reprogram. If the fob body itself is cracked or the chip is damaged, then we go the full route: new fob, cut the blade, program the transponder to the immobilizer on site. What exactly is a remote key, and how is it different from just a regular key?

Your 2004 Echo key does three things at once. The blade is a physical cut key that turns in the ignition and door lock cylinders. Inside the fob body there is a transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer when you insert the key, and the car checks that chip every time before allowing the engine to run. Then the three buttons handle remote lock, unlock, and trunk release over radio frequency. All of that lives in one unit. Lose it, and you need all three functions replaced together, not just a key cut at a hardware store.

My Echo is showing a key-not-detected warning. Where do I even start?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery is the most common reason the immobilizer antenna stops reading the chip reliably on these fobs. Pull the old one out, check the contacts for corrosion or a slight bend, and seat a fresh CR2032 flat and firm.

If a new battery does not fix it, try a different ignition start with the fob held close to the cylinder, not just in your hand. Sometimes on a worn fob the chip needs to be right against the antenna ring to read.

Still nothing? At that point the problem is either the fob itself, the antenna ring around the ignition, or something deeper in the immobilizer circuit. That is a diagnosis job, not a battery swap, and it is exactly the kind of thing I sort out on site in the Lake Poway Area without you towing anywhere.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2004 Echo. Can I program it myself?

For the remote functions only, there is an onboard add-a-key sequence that works on some Toyota fobs from this era, and owners have documented it on forums for the Echo. It involves a specific sequence of door and ignition actions that puts the car into a programming mode so it learns the new remote's signal for lock, unlock, and trunk.

Here is the catch: that sequence handles the remote side, not the transponder chip. If your replacement fob is a full combo unit with a new chip, the transponder still needs to be enrolled through a programmer connected to the OBD port. The car will accept the remote buttons but won't start if the chip isn't registered.

So: bought a shell with just remote electronics and your old chip is going in it, the onboard sequence may get you there. Bought a complete new fob with a fresh chip, you need a tech with the right equipment for the transponder side. If you are not sure which situation you are in, call me before you spend an afternoon on a relearn that only solves half the problem.
