There is a parking area near Lake Poway that fills up on weekend mornings. A woman called me from there on a Saturday, standing next to her 2004 Echo with both hands full of grocery bags and a fob that had stopped talking to the car.

She had already tried the trunk button about fifteen times. Nothing. Lock and unlock, same story. The car would start, so the transponder chip was still alive, but the remote side was completely dead.

I pulled up, popped the fob open right there in the lot, and the CR2032 looked fine at first glance. But when I pressed it, it had a little give to it, sitting just slightly off the positive contact. Lock button. The mirrors dipped and the doors thunked. Trunk button. Lid popped. She laughed a little because the fix was that small.

That said, I still walked the range test, checked the lock from across the lot, and did three consecutive starts to confirm the transponder side was solid before I called it done. On a twenty-year-old fob, you want to know the whole picture, not just that the remote came back.

She mentioned she had looked up dealer pricing before calling. Said what she paid me was a fraction of what they quoted just to diagnose it.
