A college junior at a Craigslist meetup in Ramona had that exact story. Her only key to her 1998 Volkswagen Beetle cracked at the flip hinge and the blade separated. The remote half was in her hand and the blade was stuck in the door lock. Zero working keys and a car she needed for her commute to campus.
I used my VVDI2 to read the transponder data from the broken flip key since the chip was intact inside the cracked housing. That let me skip a full all-keys-lost procedure. I extracted the broken blade, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh keys. Her flip key, FCC ID NBG8137T, was a 4-button remote that I rebuilt into new shells with the cloned chip. I showed her the chip from the cracked key so she could see it was still good.
She went from zero keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was around $204. Dealer wanted $415 either way. If you have the pieces, bring them. The chip data is usually still good.
