Out at Poway Business Park, I pulled up to a 1999 Beetle sitting in a surface lot on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner had already been to the dealer. She didn't want to go back.
The story was simple: one key, no spare, and the fob buttons had gotten flaky over the past few months. She'd been manually unlocking with the key blade for a while and just living with it. Then the battery died in the fob and she replaced it herself, which is the right call. But the remote still wouldn't respond after the swap, and now she wasn't sure if the fob itself was the problem or something deeper.
I popped the fob open first. The CR2032 she'd put in was the right type, but the contact on the negative side had a slight outward bow to it, enough to make intermittent contact. A lot of people swap the battery and close the case without checking that. Bent it back, reseated the cell, and tested the buttons before touching anything else. Lock and unlock came back immediately.
Then I verified the key blade still had a clean cut profile and tested the ignition a few times to confirm the transponder was reading without hesitation. Everything came back solid.
She didn't need a new fob. She needed someone to actually look at what was in front of them instead of jumping straight to a replacement. The dealer had quoted her a full replacement key and mentioned the process would take several days because of how they source keys for older VW models. We were done in about twenty minutes, in the lot, without moving the car.
