How long does a VW dealer actually take to replace a key for a 2014 Beetle?

What exactly is a remote flip key and what does mine do?

It's a key where the metal blade folds into the body of the fob when you're not using it. Press a button and the blade pops out. Your 2014 Beetle uses a 4-button version. Inside the head of the key is a transponder chip that communicates with the immobilizer every time you go to start the car. The remote portion handles your lock, unlock, and other button functions separately. Both sides have to be working and properly matched to your vehicle. A key that's been cut correctly but not programmed will turn in the ignition and do nothing. A programmed chip in a key with a dead CR2032 will start the car but give you no remote function. They're two systems sharing one piece of hardware.

My 2014 Beetle starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Start with the CR2032. That's usually it. The transponder that starts the car draws very little power, so a weakening battery can kill the remote functions long before the engine notices anything is wrong. Pop the fob open, swap the battery, and test all four buttons. If they come back, you're done. If one or two buttons are dead after a fresh battery, the contacts inside the fob may have corroded or the rubber pad has worn through. That's a fob hardware issue, not an immobilizer issue. A full re-program is only necessary if the remote still doesn't respond after a confirmed good battery, or if the fob was replaced entirely.
