The car's immobilizer checks the transponder chip through a coil in the ignition or through proximity antennas on push-to-start models. Programming a new key means telling that immobilizer to accept one more chip code. I do it through the OBD port with a cable and a diagnostic computer. No dealer bay, no lift, no factory VAG software.
A gallery owner at her art gallery in Santa Barbara, El Capitan State Beach area on a Saturday afternoon was certain her 2000 Audi TT needed the dealer. Her car sat in the same spot the entire time. She paid 309. The dealer wanted 559 and a weekday appointment. The car does not know whether the key was programmed in a dealer bay or a gallery parking lot. The security handshake is identical.
