Up on San Marcos Pass in Santa Barbara, a guy flagged me down to his driveway where his 2002 TT Quattro sat with the hood popped. He had been chasing a no-start for two days.
He told me the car cranked fine but would not fire. The dash showed the immobilizer light blinking steadily, which on the Immo3 system means the cluster is not seeing a valid ID48 transponder signal. He had already swapped batteries in the fob, tried holding it right against the ignition ring, nothing. The blade turned, the starter spun, the engine would not catch.
I pulled my VVDI2 and connected through the OBD port under the dash. Read the Immo3 module in the cluster and pulled the SKC from the 8N1 920 930 unit. His original key's ID48 chip had lost its programming, which happens on these older Megamos chips after twenty-plus years. The transponder just stops responding to the coil around the ignition barrel.
Cut a new HU66 blade on my Condor, loaded a fresh ID48 chip, and wrote it to the cluster through VVDI2. The whole job from connecting to handing him a tested key ran about 40 minutes. He turned the ignition, the immobilizer light went solid for a second and then off. Fired right up.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him days of wait time plus a tow down the pass. Instead he never left his own driveway.
