I got a call from someone over on the Mesa, the bluffs-side neighborhood in Santa Barbara where the streets dead-end into ocean views. She had a 2005 Audi TT and one key. Past tense, because she'd just snapped the blade off in her door lock trying to force it on a cold morning. The blade tip was still sitting in the cylinder.
The car was in her driveway, which was tight, with a low retaining wall on one side. She'd already called a tow company that didn't want to deal with the angle, and the dealer told her the car had to come to them before they'd even look at parts availability.
I pulled up with my van and the first thing I did was extract the broken blade from the door cylinder. That's the part people forget: you still have to get the old piece out cleanly before anything else matters. Once the cylinder was clear I got into the car with the remaining key stub and the transponder side still worked, so the car started. Good. That told me exactly what I was dealing with.
I cut a new flip key blade on the machine in the van, transferred the transponder portion carefully, and programmed the remote side so the fob buttons were live again. Tested every button, tested the start, checked the door lock. Whole thing done in the driveway while she stood there watching, which is usually how people prefer it.
She said the dealer quote assumed she could get the car to them and get a service appointment. Neither of those things was true. She saved a good chunk going this route, and she didn't have to arrange a flatbed to make it happen.
