2009 Audi TT
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is going to a locksmith actually cheaper than the Audi dealer for a key like this?

On Audis, yes, and the gap tends to be meaningful. Dealers commonly split the job into three charges: the fob itself, the key blade cut, and the programming labor. Each line item is billed separately. A qualified mobile locksmith who works on European cars regularly handles the same job as a single price, comes to you, and doesn't require a service appointment or a tow. The savings on a flip-key Audi like the TT are significant. Call and compare.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming, or are those extra?

Everything is included. The key blank, cutting the blade to your vehicle, programming the transponder and remote functions, and a full test before I leave. That's how I price it. Dealers itemize this differently - the fob is one charge, the cut is another, programming labor is a third, and sometimes there's an additional diagnostic or coding fee on top. With us, one call gets you one price and one visit.

Q: My 2009 TT starts fine but the remote lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. On these flip keys, the remote functions and the immobilizer side operate differently, which is why the car can start but the lock and unlock buttons go dead. First thing to check is the CR2032 battery. A battery that still has enough voltage to satisfy the immobilizer can be too weak to broadcast the remote signal reliably. Pull the fob apart at the seam, swap in a fresh CR2032, and retest.

Q: I bought a replacement flip key fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I need a locksmith?

You'll need a locksmith or a shop with the right diagnostic equipment. The 2009 TT does not have a self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Registering a new fob to the immobilizer requires going through the OBD port with professional tools. There's no ignition-turn trick or button combination that will pair a new key on this vehicle. The blade also needs to be cut to your specific car - a key you bought online will arrive uncut.

2009 Audi TT Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out on the Eastside in Santa Barbara, a graveyard-shift pharmacist called me around 11pm. Her 2009 Audi TT was sitting in her condo garage and her only key had stopped being recognized.

Not dead, not lost - just not talking to the car anymore. The dash was giving her a key-not-detected warning every time she tried. She had already looked up tow companies and dealer hours and had mentally written off the next two or three days.

I told her to stay home.

When I got there, the garage was tight but workable. I connected to the OBD port, ran the all-keys-lost sequence for this generation of Audi flip key, and walked through the immobilizer enrollment. The process reads the vehicle's security data, clears the old key records, and registers the new fob. Her replacement flip key, the same 4-button format as her original, got cut and programmed on site. I tested every button, tested the blade in the door lock, and made sure the car started clean before I packed up.

She was back inside before midnight.

The dealer option would have meant a tow, a wait for a service appointment, and a multi-day turnaround. She mentioned the quote she had pulled up on her phone while waiting for me. I told her what we charged. She just nodded slowly and said she wished she had called first.

That's the job. No drama, no tow, done in her own garage.

Audi TT Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2009 Audi TT key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but the short answer is that it's a fraction of what the dealer charges. Our price covers the key itself, cutting the blade, programming, and mobile service to your location on the Eastside or anywhere else in Santa Barbara. No separate line items for the fob, the cut, and the programming - it's one number, and that's what you pay.
